My BIL is apparently also going to get a retriever puppy. Not sure whether it’s a boy or a girl. Also not sure my BiL has any idea what he’s let himself in for.

Advocate should not be given to border collies - the risk is low but there is one. laboklin.co.uk |

Finding it really hard with Arlo at the minute. He is barking a lot (when he hears other dogs, sees anyone go past the window or hears animals on tv). Its fine and we say quiet and shake the treats and he stops. But he is really full on and we are both self isolating again (after only having a week out and about before having to after the last time). My partner has been pretty ill and asleep for days as she tested positive, im now feeling like she did and had a test yesterday. But it means Arlo isn't getting his usual walks as we are reliant on family who are working (and 4 of the 6 we would ask are also isolating). So he is full of energy which we just don't have right now. I just miss walking him. |

Really sorry to hear that - can't be much fun for any of you including Arlo. Will he chase a ball or toy in the garden. Are there any little training games you can do with him as using their mental energy will also tire them out. A simple find it for example - if you have any cardboard boxes around of different sizes put them all in a circle and so they are all open/right way up then put a treat in a piece of cloth, put it in one of the boxes (with him not in the room) and encourage him to 'Find it'. He gets the treat when he does - gradually you can make it so the boxes are more difficult eg upside down, spread around the room. lid closed if it is something like a shoebox and so on. Used to tire Wanda out but also she loved doing it. We kept the same piece of cloth and now we only have to hide that somewhere without a treat and if we ask her to find it she goes off searching for it.

Obviously they need to not be able to see where you hide it and Wanda always goes to the place it was last time as her first place to look the next time!

That sounds a good plan, I'll see what we have in the garage. He is still getting his walk with the dog walker every day, but thats not until 1ish, but its an hour with 5 other dogs so tires him out a bit.

Another similar game to that one which might last a little longer is to hide 5 or so bits of kibble or any food around the room (under sofa, top of sofa, in the corner, on top of tv stand etc) whilst Arlo is out of the room. Then let him in and ask him to find it. Once they get the hang of it, they will sniff all over!
