As the others have said it is understandable behaviour in the face of a dog who needed put in its place. Since our encounters with the JRT Ernie is quick to stand up to aggressive dogs. I'm not entirely happy with this situation.

I've twice seen Jet tell an adolescent dog to back off in similar terms. It must look much more scary when done by a GSD, but imo, nothing to worry about unless blood is involved.

He’s very much still a beautiful, kind, gentle and well behaved dog! He just put on a very effective show of force to quash a potential threat by letting the other dog know (without actually harming him) that he needs to behave around you both.

Dougal has bared his teeth and shown readiness to give as good as he's got a couple of time, but both times with dogs that were in his face, and one of them was off their lead. He seems to be reacting to threat that's all.

Flossie can give Lottie a very sharp telling off at times. Indi sounds like he was well within his rights!

Thanks everyone, it was such a shock, I suppose he is growing up, GSDs do take forever to grow up.

It is hard to imagine him doing that but as everyone's said, his response was justified. He probably surprised himself too!
