Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Dougal hates his harness and runs away when we show it, he far prefers being walked in just a collar and then dragging us around while making strangulated dog struggling to breathe noises!!

Ollie is just the same - although hate is too strong a word, but we're persevering as he is easier to control on-lead with the harness and it does avoid the strangulated dog noises.

Frankie has followed up his plug chewing episode by deciding we shouldn't be watching tv and chewing through the ethernet cable from the youview box:(. In truth both, episodes were our fault; in each case leaving him alone with temptation on view. We have bought him specific chew toys, and at 14 months we still hope he'll groe out of it, but any suggestions for discouraging inappropriate chewing?

We use a perfect-fit harness on Wanda after going through about 4 different ones that were very much not a perfect fit because she isn't a standard size. We initially got it because it looked the most suitable for running with her, but we don't do much running with her these days. It's by far the most comfortable on her though, she has a very thin coat and every other one we have had rubbed her but this one is fleece lined and has never been a problem.

Maz - check that there are no seeds/burrs/thorns in Rory's ears after his escapade in the woods. Sometimes earache or at least, 'ear discomfort' can make a dog a bit miserable and clingy, even if he's not actually bothering the ear concerned.

I did wonder if something was hurting him, but I can't see anything in his ears, or any sore bits on his skin. He does have a little cut on his face though - could well be that I suppose.

Oh, and I don't know about deterring dog chewing, but if you find the answer could you please pass it on to me? I've just turned one bookcase round to face the wall, and removed all the books from another, because I'm f***ing tired of living in a house covered in tiny scraps of chewed paper. Doggy McDogface responded by stealing a coaster from the top of said bookcase and leaving tiny bits of cork all over the carpet. I asked him why he couldn't chew on one of the many chew toys, antlers or bones I have provided, and if he wanted us to live, basically, in a barn with no home furnishings, was that it?

Still waiting for a reply. In the meantime I am googling 'bookcase with doors'.

I've got a buffalo horn, the only thing I can find is distraction, give them something else to chew on. Not always successful. That and making sure certain chewing items are verboten (ie furniture)

I wonder what would happen if I left books all over the floor, and put the antlers away on a bookshelf.

Amber, a GSD I had a few dogs ago, ripped apart a whole 3 piece suite.... current dog was not left alone unless he was in his crate; so he has never chewed anything apart from his bones!

I think he is too old to do it now so is not crated when alone at night but woe betide him if he does as I replaced the 3 piece with a nice, very expensive leather one! :)

The only consolation I can offer to chewy dogs is that it could be worse (and I know that's no help at all.) Maybe keep eagle eyes on the dog and scream every time the dog chews something it shouldn't? Then offer an alternative with lots of praise?

Regular woof readers will recall my comments about my brother deciding that a very very expensive pedigree, son of a Crufts champion wonderful 'trophy' dog was the perfect addition to their high-status family. So they acquired a Newfoundland puppy, thinking it would make an ideal family pet. At the puppy stage when it was the size of a small uncontrollable sofa-missile (it knocked me off my feet in the garden and went straight through a hedge without noticing), I refused to let it into the house because of the dribble. It chewed. A lot. Starting with the door frames and skirting boards and moving on to eat the kitchen cabinets, one door at a time.

Shortly before its first birthday, when the kitchen was wrecked, the children had decided that 'walkies' meant the dog was taking them for a drag round the local park and was 'no fun at all' and wouldn't go out with it, my SIL was screaming at the amount of drool everywhere, they decided that it might not be quite the right dog for them and it was rehomed.

Their next dog was a GSD, and much loved she was too.
