It's been a mixed day today. Ernie was a wee star on his walk this morning, recalling beautifully and lying quietly under the table when we stopped for a cuppa. However, this afternoon he discovered a dead seagull on the beach and proceeded to run around with it in his mouth. He ignored every command and ran every time I got close. Eventually I called his bluff and headed for home. As soon as I was out of sight he ran after me.

There is no profit in chasing a dog who has such a valuable prize! What would you want with a dead seagull anyway?

Just dropping in.
I've also found that chasing when they have a prize never works.
Holly has now turned one. She is still bonkers but we love her anyway!

This afternoons run was halted to help retrieve a young pup who'd slipped his lead and was giving his owner the runaround beside the road. Running excitedly away-from him (whilst waving a stick) worked a treat. If you can get the the dog to run to you, it always works better than you chasing them. Took me ages to suss that one out; my previous Lab gave me the runaround for years!

That said HP, if Ernie was as attached to his seagull as my old Lab was to the dead rabbits she found from time to time, nothing would work at all!

I'm smiling at the thought of trying to get a dead anything away from a dog.

I tried to not chase. The trainer told us to recall them excitedly then get them to drop. Haha! I tried running away excitedly as well. He was having too much fun.

Our trainer also used to say the owner had to be the most exciting thing around to make the dog want to come back to them. But when the competition is a rabbit, dead or alive, then I've got no chance

I agree, a dead seagull would trump any amount of excitement from me

In our case Jess would only be REALLY interested in the dead bird if I demonstrated I wanted it too.
You would not like her in the playground, she's very much of the 'I've got something you can't have!' persuasion. Closely allied to, 'Come and get it if you're hard/quick enough.'
