Not a stupid question - it's been asked many times
The cake squares are those that you and your opponent have both visited and where the scores are tied (for example, you've both run through once and hence scored two points each). It's a means of showing a zero point lead for either of you while still differentiating from the squares that neither of you have visited.
Should you wish to have your mind bent completely - have a look at Daddy Shark's post from page 1707 in the 'Most pinned' list - where he muses at length on the 'meaning of cake'

A bit of walking and a very tiny 1.5m run has kept me in the game. Longer run today but out of grid as a friend and I are plotting through last 5.2m of our virtual London Marathon route. Fingers crossed the foot holds up.

RRR-CAZ has scored so many points in squares H7 and H8 that they've disappeared. They both showed a 26 point lead this morning.
