eL Bee!
I donate Plasma, not platelets. It's similar process to Platelet donation, but a little quicker - takes about 45 minutes.

Thanks EB and OC. *goes to google plasma and platelets. Hopes it's about blood and not TVs and small serving dishes*

I've not excuse really - the national donor centre is about 15 mins from my hoose. I went on the way home last night and, as it's in the city, took the chance to have dinner out with my wee sis afterwards. Double bubble!

Had a great chat last night - the guy next to me was in for his first time. He had a good reason to go - his great, great, great grandfather (hope I've got the number of generations right) was the first person in Scotland to receive a blood transfusion (1890s, 1900?) after having his legs amputated following a mining accident. Thought that was a really interesting anecdote.

Keep up the good work donors! :-)G

It's good to get positive reminders of why we donate, isn't it?

Positive reminders are vital to those of us who have seen gallons of donated blood poured into the arms of people who, as soon as they had stopped bleeding from their oesophageal varices (don't Google it, it's revolting and will put you right off your next post-donation pint), were going to discharge themselves, go straight to the offy and load up with Kestrel.

Or who have transfused a tiny premature baby with 6ml of blood and seen the rest of the bag discarded.

Does it absolutely have to be discarded Velociraptor? Is there no way to get round the contamination problem if a whole bag isn't needed? That sounds like a very useful invention for someone smarter than I am to present to Dragons' Den...

I knew somebody else would google it and either confirm what V said or not. Now I don't have to look. Thanks Gooner86 :-)

What Jen said. :-)

Well done, HappyG! I take it you started a flow rate competition with the guy? ;-)

I'm still not totally convinced by not being allowed to donate when having minor cuts/bruises though. If it's only about the healing for myself, but nothing to do with the blood and putting the person getting it into danger (was thinking about stuff having got into the blood through a cut or something at first before Gooner explained it), then it surely would be ok to just not tell them instead of making a fuss about a small cut? Or will they demand to see it?
