Thanks Fizz! That’s really interesting. I’m 4’11” so pretty low blood volume I guess and also pretty far outside qualifying which is a shame.

I offered platelets but after theg took the sample they told me the count was too low. Not a medical problem for me just not worth it for them. I'm platelet poor!
Well done anyone who donate platelets too. G

Suitable donors can donate platelets every 2 weeks so it's a good way to fast-track your badges but:
Sessions are at major permanent sites only, none of this rocking up to your local church hall. They hook you up to a Dalek-sized machine to draw, separate and return the blood.
You could be in the chair for 90 minutes, don't forget to bring a good book.
I found it quite unpleasant (odd sensation in the arm as the blood goes in and out, metallic taste in mouth, numbness / pins & needles in lips, felt cold) but the show-stopper for me was how many times the donation failed because they hadn't scored a direct hit on my thin vein with the needle, so the return blood was not all going back into the vein but causing bruising in the surrounding tissue.
Just me experience though, give it a try if your count is suitable.

Some good points there Fitz. Platelet donors get a two credits for each donation so your points do rack up. I’ve often wondered why the official blood table on the site only goes to to 5ft 6 inches for men? I’m 6ft tall and started donating platelets when I was over 15 stone. I’ve since lost a couple of stones and it doesn’t seem to affect my flow or donating speed but I do believe your blood volume doesn’t change no matter how much you weigh. I’ve never had any bad sensations during donating, and failure rate is about once every 6 months for me so when you’re donating every 3 weeks or so, that’s ok as far as I’m concerned. We get offered all sorts of goodies to pass the time during the donation, from biscuits to crisps to mince pies at Christmas, and there is no need to stay for a cuppa afterwards as most of the blood has been put back into you. Overall a very pleasurable experience for me.

First socially distanced donation yesterday. Also the slowest donation time ever for me despite being well hydrated. Was brought drink to the bed and they had snacks at the table on the way out. Very well organised and efficient and strange to be talking and in contact with friendly strangers after ten weeks of lockdown

Neilio I think it’s because men over that height qualify regardless of weight so no need to add any more rows to the table.
