Our eldest gave blood once he turned 17, but has only done it once or twice for various reasons which is a shame because he's o negative. He's living in Asia at the moment so will probably have to wait a bit once he gets back.

I remember doing it a Uni (probably because some girl was standing in the queue or suggested that we do it or something and it was cool / right-on). I remember being told that there was a chance that the blood might have a head on it, once they realised how much alcohol we'd all drunk in the preceeding week!

Then only gave sporadically for ages, just through disorganisation. Started more regularly again mid 30 when blood bus came to work (my first big "corporate" type employer) and we got time off to do it. And there was a girl involved there too actually. :-O And have given more regularly since then. :-) G

I wouldn't have been able to give my first few donations if the weight-for-height limit for younger donors had been in place then. Fellmouse had to wait till she was 20 for the same reason.

Three of my children have volunteered to donate, resulting in a total of one completed donation from one of them. And she's now too busy getting tattoos to donate and is unlikely to pass for over 50kg.

Fragile Do Not Bend
My first donation was aged 18 or 19, when I was in my first full time job. That was back in the day when they sent mobile units found to large workplaces so I donated every time they came round.

Rejected this morning due to Hb of 122, no donations allowed for 12 months :-(

I've been given a leaflet which details the foods I need to be eating to boost Hb, I'm slightly confused as I have haemochromatosis and they're the foods I'm supposed to avoid overdoing, so something of a Catch 22. A dilemma for my Haematology team, I think!

Well worth speaking to your haematology team, Goofee!

The one time I was rejected for a low Hb I had it rechecked on a proper lab sample (along with some other tests, because there was no obvious reason for me to have a low Hb) and it wasn't low at all, it was 13.7. But I was only given a 3-month embargo on donating and just sat it out.

Bob!
My next donation date is Wednesday of next week, 3 days after Barcelona marathon.
My previous donation was turned down for low iron, and was told 3 consecutive and I'm out......

I've just phoned to book my next one. My venue of choice can't do it until July so I'm going to a new one to me in June, which is my month of choice.
