Not quite that simple... this was a non-standard excursion.

It's a good idea though, especially as the dog will drag us back along the exact route to the car from over a mile away if we're are in a strange place, even after a couple of hours of walking.

My only thought, based on smell, is that Mr had given a lift to someone else in the village so maybe the dog picked up something from when he dropped his friend back home. But the dog was indoors and the friend lives about half a mile away so I'm quite impressed.

When I was in my early twenties and living at home, my mum would always know when I was nearly home because our (my) cat would come in. I didn’t come home the same time every day.

Apparently, my cat sits by the door the moment I leave and start my journey home. I have a cat sitter when away. They invariably report this behaviour. When I am 20 hours away, she sits there for 20 hours!
When I am 3 hours away, 3 hours. No idea how she knows!

This kitty has worked out it'll get scritched and some tasty snacks from the kids in the corner shop if it hangs about there :-)
