I'm torn on time vs distance. I can spend 4+ hours on my feet easily (with map checking and hiking up "hills" but not getting very far - or I could stick to flat roads and do 20 in not much more time.
My thought process is to alternate the two.

I wish all the LDWA marathon length or so events locally hadn't been cancelled. Even Herts Hobble in June has gone now :(

I’m not doing a medium mid-week run so my long run is a significant proportion of my weekly mileage RH

I’ve only ever done a couple of road marathons but did like a say 7 to 10 miler then on a Wednesday evening

Real shame re LDWA events situation. Great opportunity for a long run with company and refreshment laid on

I shall do as many as I can for the fun of it next year, but two or three this spring would have been useful.
Can't say I blame them for cancelling, but it's the company that would have been nice - and not having to work out a route, having instructions to follow is good practice.

Thank you Rosehip. I found a training plan that I could work with. However the long miles were crazy as it was an improvers plan so I just adjusted them to what I could manage but the consistency on the other runs have certainly helped.

Monday and Friday runs are same length (now at 7m) a speed session on a Tuesday rather than doing full on intervals I just make it a pacier run and once a month do it as an interval session.

Saturday is my long run day but I often swap with Friday as I’m off and hubby is at work so I’m not impacting the weekend too much. We also walk a lot so I try to get longer walks in at weekends too. As I don’t go the crazy long runs i generally add in a 5th run.

I run once a week with my mam so that is always very slow but good training. I’ve managed to not get injured until now I’ve just banged my knee on the freezer door 😩

Sorry your LDWA events have cancelled it’s definitely easier doing long runs with company. I find finding routes is tricky I’ve been doing loops from home they’re around 5-6m but start in different directions some overlap but it mixes it up just enough. And I get to pop in loo stop, water refil pick up snacks and go again. Soon adds up and I can have a friend or my mum join me on a lap too.

It's too flat close to home - and boring, there are only so many paths out of the village and I run them all the rest of the time, I couldn't do loops like that. I want to go "exploring" .

You're lucky to have a supportive and walking husband, that must be a great help

Excellent training gg. Sound in great shape.

Does it go overnight? I really struggled with night time stuff. If so, any chance to practice that?

Could you do a 6 hr plus (wouldn't worry about distance)? 3 weeks out would be ideal? Or big back to back? 8 hrs plus total?

Very best of luck. Great to see people's events all returning. :-) G

I have to agree the routes round here are awful by end of winter I’m lucky and live near woods and fells so I make the most of those at weekends but struggle to get any great distance without looping it. I’ve got to pick something up in town on Friday so running the long way there then back should make 20/22 miles. I don’t like our and back. Have you not got any one close by to run with even if they do short sections with you?

Exploring new places will be great I hope you get to do some shame you’re not closer to me!

Thanks 😊G my marathon took me almost 6hrs and 20 at the weekend just under 5 so I think I’d need nearer 8 to make it to the next stage I recon that will be my 30miler. I was thinking of trying one of those round the clock challenges I’m sure I could manage a mile in dark hours (I’ll get hubby to come out he can walk while I run) fitting it in is my concern with weekends away happening again - maybe a days leave will be needed.

I'm trying to decide if entering a 50K 4 weeks out is sensible or not, hoping it's not going to sell out for a while so I can wait before deciding.

There's also a 4-loop, 32.something miler, a fortnight out but I think that is too close - though I could just do 3 laps.

gg, sounds like you're peaking nicely :-)

Just to show there's no "right" answer, when I was running well I used to do a mid-week medium length run (building from 10 to 15 miles at peak training), along with a parkrun and long at the weekend (20 - 40 miles) and then whatever I fancied on other days. I was also doing a lot of yoga and kettlebells at the time which I think kept me from falling apart.

The plus point of doing multiple laps of a circuit is that it builds mental strength, especially if it's a boring circuit!
