Hannah's time bonus was the best part of two hours so I think she must have lost a lot of time doing whatever it was - there were two 1:46 bonuses including hers - and two 1:58 bonuses on one leg - and I suspect it might have been something life-threatening like this incident planetradio.co.uk

Good for you though. Four of us spent some time sorting out a runner with heat exhaustion who was throwing up all over the place in the Lakes once, fortunately fairly near a water point they'd put up for the weather that year, so it didn't cost a lot of time. My reward for that was another runner shoving me out of the way because I was on his shortest path to the water tanks :)

I once missed the final cut off by 2 minutes for an official finish and medal at an ultra. I was retrospectively awarded a medal and added to the results as I had been hours ahead of every cut off until I gave up my time to escort an injured and exhausted runner and that runner made a case to the organisers on my behalf.

Presumably Lucy was aware that the runner behind had been given a time credit?

It's an interesting one isn't it? In the unlikely circumstance that had been me, I'm pretty sure I'd have refused the time bonus if it meant a change to the podium position.

But on the flip side, would you accept a podium place if you knew that 4th place had spent several hours helping someone and missed out because of that?

I think that's the key. Hannah gained a lot on Lucy over the last 20 miles or so, and perhaps without whatever she got the bonus for, she'd have overtaken her outright.

Then you get into really imponderable things like what reserve Lucy might have found then.

Given the "bonus" times would appear to err on lower side of the amount of time lost I think it's pretty much a given Hannah would have caught Lucy without the delay. What would have happened then is the unknown? But from the organisers point of view the race rules in something like the Spine have to encourage competitors to assist one another (and what happens in such circumstances is clearly laid out to competitors).

I think it's a good rule. I saw a Facebook post from the guy Hannah and another chap helped off the hill. He said he was struggling to get warm and was sitting down for "a little think". Race rules that encourage/remove barriers for competitors to help each other out probably save lives in an event like this. I wouldn't begrudge losing a podium place in such circumstances (hahaha ha at the idea of me ever being in such a situation).

The black trophy on the live tracker is definitely a previous competitor's actual track... currently fucking off down the wrong ridge line! :-o

All finished - was worried the last one may have missed the cut off though
