There are no rules on that, other than obviously no getting in a car or on a bike.

Runners can have buddies, crew, use any facilities like cafes or whatever. I think the organisers figured that as it would be impossible to police, there's no point making anything off limits.

And as soon as you step off road, how much mud are you encountering, which will slow you down and sap your muscles more.

While that's true, I know that Sam significantly prefers trails, even if they're less energy efficient, as road running is more repetitive and can be higher impact on your joints.

Also large stretches of the A5 are pretty unwelcoming to foot traffic.

Go Sam!

I've been following one runner who looked like he might pass close enough for me to give a shout out too (he's not now though, looks as though he's a bit far west for me). From his track the River Ock has likely flooded:

Trails. Me too. The idea of this format sounds great but me and roads aren't always best buddies. And as you say some roads don't appeal at all.

Great running Sam!

When you’ve recovered, I’m interested to know your kit list.

From what I understand on the people choosing to head NW from Meriden, quite a few get on the canal towpath to head toward Birmingham and then further north from there. Many of the towpaths have been re-laid around Birmingham in recent years so less likelihood of mud/bog.
