J2R - well done on your 1500m. Nice to hit one of your targets so early in the season.
SPR, sorry to hear your 3000m didn't go to plan, but hopefully you've been able to identify what to work on or do differently for next time.

I'm looking to replace an old Garmin (310XT) and was wondering if any of you can recommend an alternative that is reasonably accurate for track sessions, please? I don't think I need anything particularly fancy, as long as I can program intervals sessions, record HR and use it for a bit of cycling and walking as well as running. Thanks!

Well the 245 with track mode will be bang on once calibrated (one lap will always be 400m if lane one is selected, regardless of whatever lane you run). It also does cycling and walking plus intervals. Won't do muiltisport mode like your 310 though, you'll need the 745 or 945 for that.
I actually let my watch take auto 1000m splits yesterday in the 3000. There are some start line configurations which mean 800, 3000, 5000, 10000 races might not quite measure right but if you start in lane 1 in the 800 or the main start line in the others rather than the forward and outside one, it will usually be bang on. For sprints you'd just tell it what lane you're in and it should work fine.

Thanks, SPR. I'll have a look at the 245, as it sounds like that will do everything I need. I definitely don't need the multisport mode now.

As a long distance runner, I know my best times are always likely to occur when it's quite cool, probably 10-15C. I understand that for sprint and middle-distance stuff, though, warmer temperatures are actually beneficial. Do any of you track aficionados have a preferred temperature range for the short stuff?

I did some stupidity on Sunday after my race on Saturday. 11.7 miles progressive then 6 x 10 sec hill sprints. The sprints actually felt really good, hitting good speeds and cadence especially the last couple but on the last one I pulled a tendon on the outside of my right hamstring, not a catastrophic pull but definitely a pull. I think I've got lucky that I'll just need this week and maybe next off tough sessions and some hamstring strengthening but a reminder that a rubbish race is still a race. Guess this one of the good reasons to have a coach, to hold you back when you try and do silly stuff like this, lol.
On Tuesday did 5200 of 100 on 100 off, no lap times so not tempted to push it. Had yesterday off. Today, after 6 x 100 on, 100 off, no lap times, I did 12 x 200 on, 200 off with lap times in 36 down to 33. Hamstring tendon was ok, just got to see if there's any reaction now.

Re weather, normally when I start track season I'm quite happy with the warm weather. This early start has been pretty cold.

Well, my comically inept track race pacing goes from strength to strength! After last week's 71s first lap in the 1500m, I did what I think was a 67s first lap (didn't hear the split) in this evening's 800m when I was aiming for an already ambitious 70-71s. I suffered the consequences in a death-march second lap, also somewhat affected by asthma. I still scraped a PB, though - 2:24.2, 0.3 seconds faster than last year's best effort.
I really need to learn how to pace these things better! I reckon I could easily shave a good 2-3 seconds off that if I had someone to hang on to who could pace it properly. The trouble with the races in this series is that I end up running with a bunch of kids who pretty well all pace it even worse than I do, shooting off at lightning speed for the first 300 metres or so and then fading, but who can rely on natural speed to get them through.
I don't know whether I'll get another chance at the 800m this year, but I'd like to think I will. I'm treating them as very much secondary to the distance running, and not really tapering for them or anything, but I do enjoy the challenge.

Trackies - as a track official - what is it that you would like to see less of from officials and conversely what would you like to see more of?
Opens can of worms and stands back !
