I am enjoying road race to much at the minute to go on the track more which dosent help, then when they end i will regret it.

I ant my 1500m time down a bit which it should 4:20 would be nice to start. then go from that.

Going to a local track on sunday for a session. Will prob go for 400m rep to start with aim for 60 -65secs for each 6 x 10 reps then shorten it down to 30, 50 and 100m at the end.

The way i have been told to use blocks was,

Find out which best to push off

Then place any foot on the line then the other directly behind. Where you heel is on the 2nd foot is where your first block goes.

Next your other foot, ypu knee should be level with you front foot (heel to mid foot) then place other block.

Then when in the process from coming for mark to set the angle in your leg so be at 90 degree angle.

Also when i set position if someone was to move your arm you should fall.

This might help.

Thanks guys. To be honest I don't think that I will ever get good enough to use blocks - but learning how to do the crouching start is good enough at present.

You lot are soooo fast! Last night was the first night that I was able to get my 300reps under the minute mark (of which I am very pleased!) - which also means good things if I want to get my 400m race time down.

Seems to be a bit windy out there today which might be a disaster for my 100m and 200m race attempts tonight - kind of wish I had focused on middle distances today instead!

Certainly was Windy down in canvey today, particularly the home straight. Schedule today called for 12 x 100metres. Half of them were ok (by my standards) the others well ????

Good luck tonight Boo hope the wind dies down for you

i want to do some more 800s and 400s this season i ran 2.17 last a couple of weeks ago but then i was really tired from all the exams and revision i had during the week and also had to miss a couple of weeks of trainning due to twisted ankle so i think i could knock that down a bit.

i'm hoping for a good 3000 time on saturday as the competition will be very tough.
i would love to get 9.30 for it but that could be a bit ambitious :P i'll be happy with a good place and any time under 9.45 i think

I am hoping to get into track running (800m - 3,000m probably) having done longer runs (X country and marathon) til now. How important/useful are spikes for the track? Should I wait and see how I do or should I get spikes immediately? If so, what would be good "beginner track spikes"?

If you want to take track seriously then I'd say spikes are pretty important to knock off those extra seconds. I don't know much about spikes, but I would just get a cheap pair of track spikes to see how you get on, Nike are usually pretty good - oh and make sure you use 6mm spikes, no bigger.

Thanks Blister - didn't even know spikes were as big as that! I presume X country spikes are totally different from track spikes? OK, I'll take a toddle to my local running shop and see what track spikes look like. Thanks again.

There's not much different really, in fact some people use the same spikes for XC and track. The main difference is the size and number of spikes on the bottom - for XC I generally use 12mm, but if it's really muddy I have some 15mm's that I can use.
