Happy new year to all whether it’s already here or on the way. Tradition in Spain is to swallow one grape for every chime of the clock at midnight. Unsurprisingly and sadly occasional reports of mishaps. Safest advice is seedless and skinless. We’ll be out on the Plaza with everyone else with a bottle of bubbly and the grapes. Small ones!

I have been inspired by the training and racing of the O60’s in 2024. Thankyou all. I look forward to continuing inspiration in 2025. Happy New Year everyone.

Interesting article https://www.outsideonline.com/health/training-performance/marathon-training-intensity/.

A lot not new, especially the 'headline' stuff. But interesting that runners of all levels did virtually identical amounts of hard zone 3 training and very similar amounts of zone 2 threshold training. The difference being almost exclusively in the amount of easy running.

And, as mentioned, the unanswered question: if those with limited time available switched to an 80-20 split would they end up going faster?

Thanks for the article, @NZD! Will read later.

parkpaddle today; really should have been called off, as the first one that I arrived at! Fortunately there was an alternative a mile away. Took it reasonably gently. Busy: took around half a minute to cross the start line (or, more correctly, start puddle). Probably around 28:40 for 396th, I think! Watch was playing up.

Lots of flooding locally, and just had a message to say that the river (Mersey) at the end of my road is at its highest recorded level. Fortunately there is a steep rise before it can reach any houses. Not so lucky for the rugby club at the bottom of the hill: water nearly up to the cross bar and almost to the top of the entrance.

367th, 28:42, 3rd in age group, WAVA 61.44%. Will get a better age grading tomorrow!
861 finishers, so in the top half of the field, to my surprise.

@NZD it's an old, and ongoing, discussion. However one has to take into account the ability of the body to assimilate hard training on a regular basis without injury.

I did prepare for a marathon once on very limited time due to work/ travelling etc on feet running hard 5 milers (6+ m/m) when I could during the week and a long hard run on a weekend and it turned out ok - but I was only 40 then :-)!!

@alehouse excellent start to the new year = and a swimming badge as well :-)
Huge turn out - was that due in part to other cancellations?

Garmin recommended 30 min at 10:35m/m pace and I nearly stuck to that but strong wind and hills did for me in the end, finishing with 10:50 pace and 2.76 miles done. HR 131/142 so an ok start to the year.

They often get 500+, with 700+ on Christmas Day. One of the quickest courses in the country.

The view from the end of my road: the road continues through the middle of the picture with the rugby club on the left and allotments on the right; fortunately there is a short sharp hill where I was standing to take the photo, so residents will be fine. Not sure when the next game of rugby will be...
