It is a dilemma. If the money is in my account it might get spent. I know I will appreciate it cushioning my bills when I turn on the heating.

I am not quite sure how it’s got so big. I do know we have changed our energy use and also our DD has gone up by £100 pm.

Bazo - maybe ask for some of the credit back perhaps?

Jen HB I'm with Shell too, I just checked their website re the £400 and saw this..

The Energy Bills Support Scheme means all domestic electricity customers will receive £400 towards their energy bills. This is split into six payments, which will appear as a monthly discount on your electricity bill. You’ll see the discount between October 2022 and March 2023.

My statement this morning:

YOUR USAGE
Your average electricity usage in this billing period was
4kWh/day, compared to 11kWh/day across the same period a
year ago.

This month's bill amounts to £48, which is what I used to pay a few years ago, before I started heating my greenhouse and before I had a whole second building... Interesting! I always thought that Scottish Power where robbers... They had me pay £87/month which dropped down when I went with SO. SP insisted they owed me nothing :-o when I left. SO dropped down to high 50/low60 pounds a month, including heating the greenhouse. I m still paying £119/month right now, as I am paying off the huge consumption of the builders between September last year and April this year...

Most interesting is the drop in energy: I have made some serious decisions as to how to save electricity and have dropped 7 kWh compared to previous years and I already was frugal before that. I know this will go up in winter when one has lights on from coming home time and I have more showers and baths (electrically heated water) and the greenhouse heater will go on again.

Must get some sort of solar system set up for the greenhouse! And get hessian for over the roof...

The last time I asked for credit back, it arrived quickly but for reasons unknown they also failed to collect the next monthly direct debit meaning I was in arrears immediately and so for that reason I wanted to let it play out

I think I would leave the credit there if it was mine. I'd feel more comfortable going into winter with a sizeable credit, should mean no increase in direct debit for a while too.

I have a credit balance but will only be about £200 after September invoice.

Hanneke, I had a quick look at your numbers and guesstimated that you're paying ~27p per kWh with a daily standing charge of ~48p. Is that correct? Your electricity consumption is admirable. Are you on a fixed rate or is it variable? I ask because those are the rates that I was on and the price cap increase to ~51p per kWh in October made me think.

For anyone that might be interested: I initiated the switch to Octopus flexible rate 4 days ago. The switch was completed yesterday: surprisingly swiftly. I was expecting to wait a while for them to communicate with my smart meter. The smart meter registered the new supplier first thing yesterday and Octopus were receiving my 1/2 hourly readings from yesterday. So, it took only a few hours. That meant that I was able to immediately switch to their 'Go' tariff at the current rates - they haven't changed yet. 'Go' is fixed for 12 months. There is also a 'Go Faster' tariff that has an off-peak duration of 5 hours with an easier to work with start time. I'm aiming to have a start time of 2130 so that we can do the heavy stuff (bread baking mostly) before going to bed. The off-peak rate for this is 8.25p kWh and both the day rate and standing charge remain the same as 'Go'.

Will it turn out to be a gamble to fix at 38.6p/kWh during the day and 7.5p 0030-0430 or 8.25p 2130-0130? We'll see, but the day rate alone is significantly lower than the price cap rate. I can certainly adapt to it and batteries are the obvious next step. Perhaps Cornwall Insight and Martin Lewis are mad, but they haven't been so far. Meanwhile the "government" does nothing.

Changing tariffs within Octopus requires just 30 days' notice and so if UK energy prices ever dip then flexibility is available. Their energy usage data is leagues ahead of my previous supplier, Ovo.

I mentioned before that I have a referral code as an Octopus customer. If anyone wants to switch to Octopus then please fmail me as we both get £50 off our bills and you'll then have your own referral code to pass on to the next Fetchie. If more than one person contacts me then I'll ensure that the next Fetchie is rewarded by the next and so on. It's the right thing to do.

ZenTao, I am on a flexible tariff. It was fixed until the end of May.
