I know the changes don't happen evenly around midday, but we haven't got to the solstice yet, so the total hours of darkness per day should still be very slightly increasing...

Yes, really. Look at sunrise/sunset times. For London there are nine days with sunset at 15:51 before we creep to 15:52. We are more than half-way through those nine days. timeanddate.com

Somebody more knowledgable and cleverer than me will probably come along to explain it.

Yeo - allied to the fact that one rotation of the Earth about its axis is just less than 24 hours (sidereal day 12h46m4s), with the remaining time in our 24h day made up by the Earth moving round the Sun
