TBH that was my initial reaction. It's not a particularly narrow course, though there is a decent section next to a canal, though equally I presume an "incident" has happened which I would expect has been reported through to HQ. Perhaps HQ have reviewed and support the approach? Unclear whether that is the case though.

Given the variety of terrain and localised risks I don’t have an issue with individual events having “local rules”. The core team must do what is best for the conditions.

Parkwalkers are different to tail walkers IMO though. They aren’t supposed to be mobile marshals as fare as I know. I thought they were just there to promote the fact that walking was fine and one doesn’t need to actually run to be able to take park.

Andy ClawS Is Coming To Town
What really grinds my gears is when a faster runner is lapping a slower participant, chooses to run into the back of the lapee*, knocking them to the ground - and then proceeds to hurl a stream of abuse at them for not having eyes in the back of their head and accusing them of ruining their time.

No mate - I've already been lapped by about a dozen runners, all of whom seemed able to do so without running into the back of me. Not looking where you're going is very much a you problem.

*It's a made-up word. But then again, so are all the other words.

Yes, that was another thing that struck me as odd. I could see how someone who wanted to walk with the tail walkers might be put off by a tail walker who had a dog or a child in tow, when they were expecting to walk "communally", but not that a tail walker held some special role in terms of supporting walkers in case of issues.

@AndyS is something that happened to you / you've seen happen?

That just makes me even more curious. Did someone fall in the canal, called out saying "help! I need the parkwalker or tailwalker to save me!", and then they couldn't because they said "sorry, I''m walking the dog and he doesn't like getting wet"?

Love to know the backstory that led to this.

Pretty sure no-one fell in the canal (you really would have to be trying very hard to achieve this, and I suspect the HQ response would be "move the route" if that happened!), but I'll see what my local spies can tell me.

BK brighter days ahead
Seems to be a situation where the tail walker was likely to have been the closest person to whoever needed help and unable to effectively, not that the tail walkers role is to be a ‘walking marshal’ but, like any other participant it would be hoped that they could assist someone or get timely assistance quickly and that was hampered by having dog and child in tow.
