Sigh (Simon Clarke)
@Dvorak - Sandwell Valley - I did it last Saturday, measured it at 5.12km; however, that didn't bother me in the slightest, makes up for the numerous parkruns I've done which clock in at 4.95km. fetcheveryone.com/t-14404511

Also, it's only their 3rd event, I'm sure it'll sort itself out. FWIW, my watch uses GPS + GLONASS, it was a clear day and there was minimal foliage instruction. More importantly, it was a really enjoyable and friendly event; glad I left the whingers in the farcebook group a long time ago.

But - where did you start and finish, Sigh? I just find it very odd that a parkrun with apparently a properly measured course should make such a mistake - and apparently, repeat it?

You can see the start and finish points on the link. It might not help that they're basically in the middle of a field, so there aren't any clear reference points for where to put them each week. But, they're new at this - I'm sure they'll sort it out.

Here - on the left is the route from their official page, and on the right is the GPS map from my run:

I don't know, but I suspect that if they started where it shows on the map, then the course would be short.

I should add - the week I was there, just beyond the finish funnel, was a large circus tent - so that may have affected their route too.

Cheers for the pic, that confirms things. Out of curiosity after the FB post I mapped it out and the mapped and described start and finish would make it properly 5 km. Even if the mapping was out, it would be 10-20m, not 160m. It just seems so very very odd do do this.

They are not the only ones - Vogrie parkrun inaugural was about 140m short and it can plainly be seen that the start on the day was a way down the path from where it should have been. And since the proper start is a few paces from a permanent marker, a railway line (a teeny-tiny railway) across the road there should have no problem in putting the start in the right place. I emailed them, but they just replied that the course was correct (in which case I doubt they bothered looking properly). (Not been back so I don't know where the run starts now, but the map hasn't changed.)

Going back a few pages our pre run briefings re under 11s are quite specific as we have a lot of water close to the course and a bridge over water/a river with no handrails so we have to emphasise the 'within arms reach' bit. For those that haven't been to Fountains Abbey one of our RDs is becoming quite an attraction in his own right due to his legendary pre run brief which he tailors to locsl or national events/news here's a little snippet of one ( Ibelieve it was trrndi g at one point!) ( i csnt seem ro pist the link but its on thd video tab of Fountains parkrun FB page).

I did Sandwell Valley on Saturday and can confirm it doesn't start where the website says it should and two of us measured it over 5.1km, but it's still one of my favourite runs. Don't think the circus made any difference. Interesting that they've banned dogs, first time I've heard of that.
