Thats why time trialling became popular as one person out on the road didn't look like a race. Also things like codes for race routes so that Police couldn't spot where a race was (unless they were a cyclist and in the know!)

I can follow them on the OS map and see exactly where I cross the contour lines and gain each 5m of altitude, but it definitely doesn't match my perception.
