Lastly...engage the core, stand strong into the standing leg and lengthen from the spine up to the top of the head...feel as if there's a string pulling up from the crown of the head.

This year is the first year I've been able to do tree with my foot on my inner thigh reliably, though it's Russian roulette as to whether I can do it when teaching it on Zoom. Before, it was always foot to the calf or even foot to the ankle!

More than 2 years ago when I started yoga I couldn't do tree ose reliably with one foot barely off the ground. Both my flexibility and my balance stopped me. I can now onost days successfully maintain a good pose with foot on inner thigh. It's well worth persisting with

For some reason I find for tree, balancing on the left foot is quite easy, but the right is more of a challenge.
Just got a new yoga mat and it's a revelation! Downward dog has never felt so good!

Mats don't make much of a difference to me...though the thicker it is, the lousier my balance tends to be. The thinner the mat, the easier it is for me to balance on one leg...less wobbling about!
Often, I'll do yoga on our carpet (quite thin) and hope my downward dogs don't turn into downward splats as either my hands or feet slip! I've had a few close calls in the office in past years.

This mat is really good for me as it has excellent grip, which was a big problem for me when doing poses like downward dog, especially when sweaty. With this mat I've got no problems, my hands and feet stay in place and there's no sliding around. I also agree that a thick mat will hinder balance poses. This is the first 'proper' yoga mat I've bought and it's definitely worth it IMO.
