I worry that Western governments are so preoccupied with Putin's attack on the continent of Europe that they're not paying enough attention to the goings on in Africa and S. America

Arguably you're right LD, but Berlin etc cannot be hit by an artillery shell from Caracas or Nairobi.

Rumours of another Flanker-variant going down, this time near Irkutsk.

Indeed. Russia's aviation industry has been particularly targeted by sanctions and there are reports of severe maintenance issues in the civilian sector. One wonders if this crash and the one last week in Yeisk are coincidental or harbingers of a trend.

Russia's defence minister has had telephone talks with his oppos in France and Turkey, about his concern that Ukraine is preparing to detonate a radioactive "dirty bomb" and blame it on Russia. Allegedly the UK was approached for advice and assistance. I hope they told him not to waste their time with this nonsense. Worrying that it is being peddled at the top level of the defence ministry. |

That would be an awful move, sure there's an Andy McNabb book with that as a plot. It didn't occur to me that the upshoot of sanctions would be aircraft crashing. It should be grounded aircraft but life is cheap for Putin. |

With winter coming it's going to get really bad for the civilians. I suppose the trickle of support is enough to keep them going, or keep weakening Russia which is more in NATO's interest.

Looks like the Ukrainians have had another pop at Sevastopol. Reports varying from devastation to minor damage. Interesting ...

HQBLKFLT wasn't it? They've stopped the "grain corridor" as an immediate reprisal. Lovely eh? The main people who are going to suffer will be the African nations who depend on Ukrainian grain.
