Well it enables the perpetrators to be some way clear of the scene. Whether timed or remotely detonated. A pistol has to be close up.

I see what you mean, it's not subtle is it? And a terrifying message. About time Putin's elite learned a bit of fear |

Propaganda from a US conservative viewpoint, but the comment on the potentially dunkirk-like situation developing is interesting. msn.com |

theguardian.com Not the first time such a ploy has been used. They should try inflatables. |

It made me smile to read about the wooden decoys. Have the Russians never watched any black and white British war films or Dad's Army?

Thing is, if they detect one they have to do something. So far it seems they haven't worked out an effective way of telling the difference between real and decoy. The only response they have is to send a missile. Doesn't mean they don't suspect one might be a fake and they are entirely fooled, but it's sucking resources from the Putin's army. The American saying the Russians have claimed to have taken out more than have been sent us gold. The counter offensive seems solid so far. |

This might amuse your sense of irony: Some Ukrainian footage of MiG29s firing what appear to be US-manufactured AGM88 (HARM) missiles. That would have been an interesting retrofit! twitter.com |

Dummy weapons are nothing new as LazyDaisy says. About 55 years ago I bought a book The Phantom Fleet by Arthur Cecil Hampshire which was about how in the 1st and 2nd World Wars the RN constructed dummy ships made of tarpaulins, timber and other materials to give them the silhouette of warships thus fooling the enemy into thinking that the RN had more warships than it actually had and possibly deter attacks. It is a fascinating read about a part of the Wars that few people know about. abebooks.co.uk I have a paperback version, but the cover is much the same. |

The Russians have inflatable missile batteries complete with fake support vehicles and heat sources to simulate the thermal signature of electronics and engines, and even in the most sophisticated examples simulated electronic emissions. Good to see the Ukrainians playing them at their own game, and being smarter with it. There was a clip from Russian TV doing the rounds on Twitter recently, of an officer in Crimea speaking while in the background a bunch of SAM tubes was swaying gently in the wind. People were taking the piss but the point is that to a drone a few hundred feet up it looks pretty real. Ditto a wooden Himars which would fool nobody on the ground. Here's hoping for the counteroffensive. |
