Hellen, I am living in the US now and the marathon on 4 December is a local affair for me, the B&A trail marathon. It receives rave reviews on marathon-guide.com. It's a low key small affair with a half taking place at the same time.

4 March even! Now 4 December would have been ambitious!

West - P&D has 12 week plan and also advice for what to do with 6 - 12 weeks between marathons, in the chapter on "multiple marathoners" (which I think is subtitled, "Running for nutjobs", though I may be paraphrasing?!) :-)G

Lol Happy! Indeed it does, and indeed it is; it came into great use when I did two marathons last year within five weeks of each other.

That section for multiple marathons is based on the idea that you're racing both of them flat out, in which case, I would agree that it's for nutjobs. Multiple marathons treated as long runs is less stress on the body.
My theory is (and I don't have any evidence beyond what I've seen myself) that the less effort you put into a race the less damage you'll do.
eg. If you run a marathon in your PB + 5% every day for 10 days, you're going to be a lot more wrecked than if you've run it in your PB + 15%. ie. Off a 3:30 PB, 10 days of 3:40:30 marathons will be a lot harder than 10 days of 4:01:30.
If you're treating them like long runs, then you can do them a lot more often. If you're racing, I'd follow P&D's advice.

Totally agree Naomi. Half mara for me this weekend, but pure social easy run. Recovery and rebuild post mara. Ditto D33 ultra in feb (maybe!), just as a v slow, long run pre VLM. It can be done! :-)G

Hello campers. So first shot at the marathon this weekend gone and I hit 3.42.25. It was at Athens which is a hard course by all accounts. Also ran with man flu so I reckon that with the right guidance I could go 3:30 at a push. All training so far has just been using a Runners World smart coach schedule and running 3 times a week, no other exercise or training except for the odd 7 mile cycle commute to work once a week. So, what next please? Mark.
