John, yes! I didn't want to say it, but I'm a strong believer in lots of long slow miles. Where you feel it is at 20 miles. I can give u specific experience of trying both ways and what worked for me, if you like. But generally more long, slow miles = more fun after 20 miles in mara! :-)G

3.31.29 today at a track marathon so getting close
I was wondering what normal people do between marathons when just racing 2 a year. I have just got my time down from 3.52 to 3.31 over the last couple of months. No plans for any more racing of marathons until April next year. So what should I do between now and then. Should I just do base training for the next couple of months then pick up the speedy stuff?

2 a year is full time training hellen, imho! 4.5 month training plan, couple of weeks rest and then straight back into next one, virtually! I've got a few weeks where I'll just do 4 or 5 days running a week, a few races that I fancy at weekends, then by end of Nov, I need to start on VLM training! :-)G

couple of weeks rest is not much. I was thinking of a couple of months of just base training with the odd speed session thrown in but with some hillier runs than usual. I feel like my body needs to break from hard stuff for a while but I dont want to lose where I am at

We should always listen to our bodies. If you keep a good base going you won't lose anything, in fact you might start your next campaign fresher. Have you looked at the recovery 5 week block at the end of each P&D plan? I have to say, I sort of ignored it, by taking a whole week off running, but it does say "minimum 2 days off and longer if you need it" then just a 3 - 4 mile runs for first week or so. But it re-introduces strides somewhere quite quickly and gets long runs back up gradually. Maybe follow that? :-)G

I'll have a loook at that thanks happyG. I am fine doing the miles , do around 60 miles a week , and can do that milage indefinatly, I just think that the fast stuff takes a lot out of me
