Have you got shares in P&D !!!!????
Yes, I agree about the periodisation thing that is why I think my next few months are going to be a kind of rest/recovery time. I have a weeks hol in Dec and during the snow/ice I will be doing less as that has injured me in the past. So now is a good time for rest (relative rest I mean!)
These 4 marathons recently have been a bit unusual really. Generally I will go out and run them at an easy pace and would normally only target a few a year for racing.
Next year I am thinking Hull / Northmapton on 8th April as a first stab at a PB, then I go on hols so will get in some hot weather training and a bit of a rest before coming back and having another go at a track marathon on 29th April.

I found I was racing myself fitter in my string of good performances last spring, a bit like Hellen.
The 3:30 was beyond me in Stockholm and I haven't really had a go at it since. I think when I do have a bash at Brighton 2012 (thread admin!) then I'll be taking a more standard approach and not running any marathons in the build up. I should be capable of 3:25 I reckon, it's just finding the right race and having the stars in alignment on the day.
I could have had a go around now, as my endurance is at the right level but I missed Porto, where I would have wanted to have done it. Brighton is about right - decent size, not too crowded, pretty much flat, good weather (assuming the wind holds off) and good support to get you through the last 3 miles.

are, I'm wondering about sub 3.30 at Brighton too. My only worry is the heat, but if it's not too hot then I'd like to give it a real go.

You are quite right there N, I think each marathon I have raced has made me fitter for the next one. I have got 4 PBs in the last 7 weeks although I didnt go full pelt on the first two and Leicester - Abo - track has been a progressively easier course.
I think Anna and GF also did similar, lots of marathon PBs close together off the back of mainly other marathons and lots of training miles rather than speed.
think we are all diff though and what works for one will not work for all. Also, I think we have to do what we enjoy, some people hate doing the base miles and find it a real chore whereas I quite like them so doing lots of miles intersperced with the odd bit of fast stuff is what I enjoy

Sorry Naomi. Hope you didn't think I was taking your name in vain. But I just thought you were an example of someone doing amazing big miles and lots of marathons, but struggling to change your pace, a bit. Apologies if I go tthat wrong. :-)G

Keefster, if you are on here more regularly than whoever is thread admin, then just ask Lord Fetch to reinstate you. He will if there's a good reason. A thread needs an omnipresent and enthusiastic admin. IMHO! :-)G

None taken! I think my main problem is I'm so mentally tired of marathons that the big miles are too much effort, especially the long runs. This year, I've discovered a lot of speed, never thought I'd run a 20:42 5k or a sub 44 10k.
Am concentrating on a 1:36:xx half for now, then have a think about Brighton early spring.

Nice use if omnipresent Happy! Interesting discussion on periodisation; I am trying to figure out to to incorporate periodisation into a plan for a Marathon that takes place on 4 March next year. My last target Mara this year takes place in Sunday, so there is a relatively short time between them, not much more than twelve weeks...'light bulb moment'...P&D has twelve week plans too! Sorted.

What's on 4 march, that sounds a good date for a marathon, shouldn't be too not then!
