Well done Oscar that’s what I was going for I think the new Manchester course isn’t flat as advertised the old one was. I see loads of people lose time 16/18/19/22 there were hills albeit smallish ones like 30-60 ones. I recon 4-5 mins of walking.

Newport is definitely flat, HoD. A (big) bridge in mile 1 and at the start of mile 26. Around 50m of elevation in the whole thing!!

Frustrating when something is advertised as - and has previously been - really flat but doesn't quite live up to it.

I did Manchester on 2016 it was flat and I think a better course. Lots of twists and turns in this one there are fast bits. But 5/6 inclines where I think loses you a few minutes for the average runner. It’s not quite Snowdon but definitely not pancake.

I find it really interesting the preference for flat races. I generally prefer some hills, as evidenced by my recent 4:01 on a 600m+ elevation marathon, compared to my PB of 3:54 at Munich which has ~250m elevation, and then my 3:59 effort at Berlin which has ~160m (all figures according to my Garmin).

I relish the opportunity to change up the stride, short steps up the hills, open up the legs on the downhill etc

But your faster time was on the flat and it's time we're after. I love hills, just not for a 'flat out' attempt at anything.

Well yes, technically. But only 2 minutes slower than Berlin, whilst doing 400m extra elevation gain.

Though i'd agree for pretty much any distance shorter than the marathon, you probably don't want hills. Or perhaps it's a pace thing. If you're a 4 hour runner, then hills won't be as much of a concern than if you're a sub 3 runner.

Yeah, that's probably it.

Interesting point about hills, ptr_red nose runner. I went to check my race results for half and full marathon distance and had a look at the elevation profile.

My marathon PB is from Abingdon, a pretty flat course with 62 m according to Garmin. 3:33:00. In Chester, I was nearly 2 min slower with 3:34:59, 191 m on Garmin. Snowdonia is a very hilly one, 778 m and I finished in 3:52:19. So I'm definitely a fan of flatter ones.

Abingdon was nice as it wasn't 100% flat but mostly either 1-2% up or down, so very gently rolling hills with 5m elevation at best. I like a bit of variation because it allows you to vary your stride. Too many hills and it costs too much energy.

When it comes to HM times, my best times were both run in the Anglesey half, 1:38:02 and 1:38:52 in 2016 and 2018 respectively. Anglesey has about 150 m (Garmin showed 141 and 162 so I assume it's in the middle) while Öpfingen, Lake Vyrnwy and the Village Bakery in Wrexham are all very flat, 30-50 m of elevation, and I didn't run as fast. In Öpfingen, I just duck in under 1:40 with 1:39:53, missed out on the sub 1:40 with 1:40:04 in Lake Vyrnwy and 1:42:21 in Wrexham. So there, it really looks like hillier half marathons are better for me. I'm running faster there (7:20-7:40 min/mi compared to 8+ min/mi in the marathons) but not as long, so fatigue from going up the hills wouldn't play the same role as in a marathon, that's my guess.
