tipsku London 2018. My toughest marathon to date; took me at least an hour to be able to stand up again after laying down (rather than simply collapsing) after the finish. I’ve never known cramps in my feet like it. A lot of dreams sizzled on the tarmac that year. I managed 3:22 (still my best London time) but I believe that I was in much better shape than that.

London 2018 was carnage. I was in the start pen sweating and changed my target from 3:00 to 3:10.....it was carnage out there with me passing people by 10k who had gone out at sub 3 pace.....even my 3:10 target was nonsence and I limped home in 3:21 broken.

I wasnt as bad a SS, but not far away from it

That was the same weekend as Leipzig - same story. I feel your frustration with that day.
I was in shape for a 3:30 attempt but only managed 3:45. I saw several collapsed runners in the second half (it's 2 laps of the half course) and the ambulances were busy that day. I got cramps from about 22 miles, had to walk through the final aid stations.

I didn't fully recover from that until several months later, mentally and physically. Running in the heat killed my joy of running and the following 4 months (May to August) were unbearably hot in Eastern Germany. The weather office recorded most summer days with 25+ and heat days with 30+ degrees (86 and 29 days respectively). The drought started there and the soil still hasn't fully recovered from it 5 years later. We have been in moderate to extreme drought since summer 2018 and no end in sight - this year has been too dry, too. Anyways, that's just my 2p as a meteorologist, back to running.
I started running again in September 2018 and kept running through summer 2019 but didn't race much. Then 2020/2021 put a dampener on things so that I only got back into training and racing properly last year. I feel like I've lost 4 years but I'm glad I'm able to run near or at the same level as in 2018. No matter how Leipzig goes in 10 days time, I'm happy where I am right now.

I was watching at Fetchpoint in 2018 and we saw loads of people suffering from the heat. The other side of the road is just after half way and there were runners collapsing at that stage never mind near the end.
