I was looking at some magic shoes in run4it today. They don't bother putting prices next to the shoes... I didn't ask!
Well done on the marathons at the weekend KinkyS,brunski and allmathew. Was watching London from the sofa this year, looked like perfect conditions apart from what I've read about the red start.

Thanks Stoosh, yeah I was worried about the weather forecasts pre-London but apart from it being maybe a tad warm at the end it was pretty much perfect.
What did you make of the joker who set off like a 400m runner to lead the first few minutes?

I don't see the point in sprinting off the startline just for a '15mins of fame' sort of thing tbh. Unless he had awesome powers of recovery, he probably run 25m with to much lactic in his legs. Seems a bit of a waste of a race but each to their own.

It happens every year in fairness. There was another guy who stayed with the lead group for longer, close to a mile perhaps. I thought it was a great bit of fun. It made me track them and predictably they both blew up spectacularly (3:15 -> 3:20ish IIRC).
I’d love to do it but I couldn’t get on the champs start and couldn’t run even 400m at 2:0x mara pace!!

Yeah I'm torn between 'why do it' and 'it's something to tell the grandkids' if I'm honest. On the face of it I'd say its a bit pointless, like a glorified version of leading parkrun for the first 800m then fading.
I'd guess the person who did it wasn't in the shape he wanted and so used his Champs start for another purpose.

Easy enough to test running economy HG: Pick a standard training route & run it to a fixed HR in each pair of shoes. Probably worth making it a tempo run since they seem to work better at speed. Repeat as many times as you need to control for wind/temperature/humidity/fatigue etc & compare mean pace.
Like you KS I’m curious as to how I’d respond.
No way I’d shell out the money just to find out though.

I didn't want to buy super shoes, I wanted to run faster because I was fitter and not because of the technology but as I toed the line in each race and looked at the shoes that other athletes were wearing, it dawned on me that I was not going to be competitive unless I joined them. I bought Nike Dragonflies for the track and ASICS Magic Speeds for the roads, I know that both are designed to make you faster (they most certainly work) but as an older runner, they also seem to take less out of my calf muscles. Last year I ran 38:12 for 10,000m in Adidas DistanceStars and could barely walk for a couple of days let alone run, this year I ran 36:50 in the DragonFlies and was able to do a speed session 48 hours later. I'd worn the Magic Speeds 6 days earlier and ran 37:04, both of these were lifetime bests! I know that I'm fitter and stronger than I've ever been and as such I'm faster but I'd never have been able to run races that fast and that close together in normal shoes. The Magic Speeds are at the cheaper end of the range (£100-150) and the Dragonflies can be picked up now for around £90 in the Nike sale.

I agree they seemed to take less out of my legs too on the one race I have so far worn mine - Brooks Hyperion Elite for a 10k

Wow, brilliant times Alyn. Well done.
Yes FJ, I suppose I could do that. If I *ever* do a tempo run again! ;-).I do very little structured training g. I'm lucky if I "jog" 30 or 40 miles in a week. Then the odd parkrun, club time trial or intervals occasionally and even more occasional races. Would take me many months to do even a few comparisons! I'll let you all know though!
And I paid £149 for my Nike Vaporflys on sale. I know plenty of people who have always paid £100- £120 for "normal" trainers. I have regularly paid under £50, even as little as £25 over the years. I am lucky that I have a relatively light gait and can earn any type of trainers. Also run mostly off road which is easier on trainers so I get 1000 miles regularly. I bet I've spent 1/4 what most of you have per mile over my 24000 miles of running! So one pair of £149 shoes isn't breaking the bank! I like Velociraptor's technique of getting cheap 2nd had off way too!
Good luck in Chicago to Rossco and everyone doing October marathons.
