Thanks peops!

Been running for 4 years, started quite late(I’m 40) but have always enjoyed mountain biking so some level of activity was in there.

A friend suggested Athens Marathon and suddenly it was a thing, it was super tough but also amazing and still going! Athens was 3:51 in 2017, Chester 2018 did a 3:31, York last year was 3:20.

Build up to this race was a mixed bag, was supposed to be April originally of course so kinda trained for that but knew what was coming with the cancellation. Then decided to get stuck back in during the lockdown to avoid going insane, did a virtual 50k with a mate August 1st.

From then I was supposed to be doing the Pfitzinger 12week 70miles a week program but I kinda struggled with the schedule, never managed more than 55miles in a week and missed a couple of the 20+ runs. The speed work stuff did go well though, got under 40mins for the 10k and 1:29 in the half and I think that’s what got me through on Sunday, I really felt the tiredness in the legs from about 35k and with the winds.

Cheeko nice progression and converting 1:29 half to 3:08 seems like a good result. I am sure getting the 20 milers in will help get towards 3hrs especially in a "real" race

That is good progress and conversion cheeko. Especially not in a proper race.

My legs feel pretty good today so I will be back out for a plod later on.

Good conversion cheeko. I always think of the speed work and MP sessions get you to 23 miles at the right pace in good shape, the 20+ milers help you maintain that pace in the last 3 miles. You did well considering you dropped some on the P&D, most of us add more to their plan.

Thanks!

Yeah I didn’t really look at my watch much during the run, tried to run by feel and know the route well so I could gauge distance until a couple glances at the end so was pleased to hit the time I did.

At this point I feel like running a 1:25 half for me now is much more intimidating than breaking 3 in the full. Will take an easy winter and then roll again next year.

My 5k PR is 19:01, that can definitely come down in the coming weeks.

What’s everyone else’s race plans now?

No race plans as I've learned from recent experience that even the dead cert, no cancellation likely events still get cancelled. So need to find something to spur me on!

Tried out getting stuck in on club sessions with Helsby RC this week. Misunderstood the coach's session for the first one (alternating 2min on / 1 min off with 1 min on / 1 min off) when he set we'd do 8 sets to be 24 minutes of running - obviously (now!) he meant 24 minutes of effort! And then last night was brave enough to sign up with the "fast" group who decided to do 4.5 miles steady, 4 miles effort; hung on at the back but a rude awakening about my fitness for anything longer than 10k of effort. Before last night I'd have said I could probably have knocked out a HM in sub 90, but not so sure after that.

I've optimistically put the JD 4 week programme into my fetch diary for the next 26 weeks. Maybe I'll get into the habit of doing that, but without a race to focus on I know I'm going to struggle, so I though if I posted here that would at least be something of a public declaration of intent!!

I've just signed up for a low key 50 mile trail run next April for exactly those reasons, Larks. Agree it is hard to motivate but that will get me focused in the winter.

Maybe I need something similar - ambitious, different, but sufficiently low key that it won't risk cancellation.

cheeko, you should definitely be thinking of sub3 next time in a proper race. There are strong signs of a good aptitude for the distance.

I’ve got a hilly half coming up that seems to be going ahead. The running won’t be pretty but the course (Lake District) should be :-)

I need to have a look and see if there are any small races around me as I need a target sooner than next October !

Might need to be larkim style solo time trials.
