I do think it's very intriguing - on a par with home advantage in team sports etc - how and why we extract additional physiological performance simply due to extraneous factors such as being in company.

I terms of mental weakness, I think actually my tendency to run too hard is evidence of mental weakness on my part, rather than toughness. For me, that is usually the consequence of not sticking to a plan or pace boundary when I could and should do, usually for some bizarre fear of looking "weak" if I "only" do intervals at 6:15 pace rather than 6:00 etc.

Pacemakers wouldn't exist if it wasn't generally easier to follow than to set the pace.

I definitely perform better in races with some competition around me. I cannot hit the paces in training that I find in a race. I would put that down to a bit of a mental weakness for me in training as I know I can do it, I just cant push myself that hard on a cold dark wet evening

So I missed my sub 3:15 by 1 1/2 hours yesterday running my virtual Boston over the Cotswold Way with 3,800 feet of climbing. Slowest marathon by over an hour but great fun. I still felt as if I had a few more miles in me at the end despite it being quite warm.

Lol! Was average HR about where you would have expected it though B Rub?! Well done to anyone doing virtual marathons (Derby Tup did same over weekend) - great commitment. :-) G

Quite right Larks, I should have tried to catch up in the second half with a sub 1 hour 1/2. HR wasn't too bad G, generally below 140 until 18 miles. It rose a bit towards the end due to the heat and being a bit tired. I was actually quite pleased with averaging 13 minute miles on some serious climbs.

Good work BR. I still cannot decide how to tackle the virtual vlm. Currently caught between just doing 26.2 miles or targeting sub 3:15.

Go for the 3:15 Baz. You seem to be in reasonable form and might be the only entry this year on the right there -->

The 3:15 requires me to find a route I can run without lots of stop start road crossings etc and also factor in having a drink available.

I could on the other hand head for the pentlandite hills and just do something similar to you.
