I was an 800m runner at school (2:06). Although I never measured my HR (were the HR straps available in 1982?) I don't think anything stresses the heart as much as the last 100m of an 800m. I'm guessing the last 50m in 400m races gets close but 1500m+ distance starts getting into the endurance territory. I would guess a well-trained 800m runner with a decent warmup will get up to 90%+ after 400-600m.

2:06 is moving BR.

Agree about 1500m being endurance territory. As my endurance has improved, I see how different the 800 is and how important specific training is for it.

HR data from 800m, you can actually see it lags for pace, cadence and HR (so short sprint data will always be wrong apart from peak speed as cadence), then starts climbing. Peaks at 178 at about 90 secs but then drops to 170 over the rest of the way. Not convinced by the drop given the pace and cadence data but it was my slowest race 800 in four years and 2:06, 2:13 split so I wouldn't have hit max in this race.

That's a world of running that is alien to me. Lol at 1500m being endurance territory ;-)

Interesting SPR. Do you think you would have maintained your max HR to the end of the race if you had been on form?

It's a whole different world of pain Bazo. I remember racing a county championship 5,000m race and wondering why people would want to spend such a long time running.

London should show their hand later this week and I am pretty certain there is no way they can be getting 40k runners plus spectators to gather in London given the way things are and the fact that numbers are starting to increase. However on yesterdays run I did find myself mulling over what I would do in the time available if it was run.

I hatched a plan of sorts but whether or not it would be effective who knows. It did make me wonder though if I should start to introduce some faster stuff into my running as I have dropped that completely during lockdown and just focussed on base building.

Farah, Bekele, Gebrselassie, Kipchoge, Hassan, Dibaba, Lagat, El Guerrouj all show 1500m is endurance territory and there's probably a few others that I've missed. It has more to it but endurance is a huge part.

Endurance being a huge part is why I ran 4:30/ 16:50, 4:27/16:40, 4:27/ 16:26 in 2017, 2018, 2019 with a fastest 800 of 2:14.43 and less than ten total sessions on track (it's probably less than 5). My 1500m PB before that was 4:48 (2012) and I ran 4:50 in 2016. I ran a PB at the time of 2:16.6 for 800 that year, so only 2.2 sec speed improvement on paper (might be capable of more but got to take the evidence of three years).

The more to it part is why I need to get fit enough to do more sessions next year as the 800 speed will become a limiter soon if it isn't already.

BR - My max is in the 200s and I get up to 190 at the end of progressive runs so I'd expect to get into the 190s at least when on form.

I would still train as if it's on Baz - you never know what might happen. Finding the motivation to do the hard training, baring in mind the likelihood of cancellation is a completely different matter.
