Max hr I have as watch detected I think. I have never really been successful when I have tried a hr test for various reasons.

Getting accurate HR readings for your day to day runs, plus for setting the Max is pretty important for these calculations I believe.

Are you using Optical or a chest/arm strap ? if optical does it seem reasonable ? Quite a lot of people find optical is ok for day to day wear but wildly inaccurate during strenuous exercise. I'd use a strap for a few weeks, plus do a MaxHR test wearing a strap, and see if that improves things.

MaxHR pretty easy to do. Find a runnable hill, do 5 or 6 hill reps of about 90-120 secs, at a consistent hard effort ( turn around immediately and jog down and re-start ), really push the final one until you feel you're almost going to throw up. :-)

Gus, "...MaxHR test is pretty easy..." Completely agree. As long as you don't mind puking! :-) G

Yeah I find the max hr test very difficult as I cannot push myself that far. The best test for me has been a raced Parkrun and a real push at the end.

I agree with jda that With VO2max the level can be off but relativities are about right. But also like Happy G I tend to watch bpm more. VO2max works better with intervals than bpm.

Today’s schedule called for a VO2max interval workout. I’ve never got on with the Jack Daniels sessions which call for 8x1k or similar. Instead I did 20x1 min with 1 minute recovery followed by 20x30secs with 30 secs recovery. Really good for getting the legs moving and a bit of speed. I’ve got a couple more of those type of sessions lined up in the schedule with the rest of the ‘quality’ sessions at marathon pace or tempo.

Quite randomly, my Garmin is spot-on just now. Predicts 19:11 for a 5k and I ran 19:25 solo a few weeks ago and have probably nudged up speed a little since then.

OTOH the marathon prediction of 3:03 is optimistic, but that's mostly cos I haven't run over 16k since March and am about 5kg over race weight. I could probably do that with a month or two of long runs.

What's your Garmin Jda? I bet you could run the marathon, although it might be messy and the after effects would be more than you're used to. Presume your Garmin is one that uses lookup tables?

Njo - Think the 735 uses lookup tables so can be wildly out for some.

The interesting thing for me is given my max is in at 210, it's unlikely to be higher so there's nowhere to go in terms of max HR for higher VO2 max.

I'm hopeful that the 800m will give me a good idea of my max ATM as now I have optical, it will be the first time I've had HR in a race for years and my previous max HRs all came from races.

So I probably have the max He set too high so Garmin thinks I have more in reserve than I really do? I wonder if I could back-engineer my max HR based on decreasing the max HR to get a more realistic time prediction?

Njo - Possible, especially if you've had an erroneous reading, but also could be that the lookup table just doesn't work for you.

Are you able to look back at when your max HR was recorded to see if it was a spike?

I have a 235 and the optical HR is a bit dodgy through much of my training so I don't really know where they are getting the numbers from.

I really think I'd fall apart badly after 20 miles in current shape. Regardless of speed. I've been doing a regular hilly 16k(ish) but that's about 1h30, 1:45 tops if I go the long way. Aiming to get back into it properly around Sept I think. Enjoying the downtime for now.
