Baz - I was thinking if you could get the times down at shorter distances, you'd have more margin at marathon. My thinking is still keep high base/mara mileage but a session a week aimed at 5k pace. Think you already do strides (faster than 5k pace?). Personally, I think your current conversion to marathon is pretty impressive.

Baz/ FR - I presume most on here understand pacing and that while everyone gets it wrong sometimes it's not because you went out at 2:45 pace when you thought you were capable of 3 hrs! This is what many of the 5ks you refer to do.

In regards to your similar pace comment, Baz, did that feel like similar effort? Sometimes it's just a bad day even if the shape is similar but I'd expect there would be warnings in terms of sensations?

JB - Need to do Snowdon on your conversion I'd go close to 2:50 ;-)

Lou I'm lucky enough that I have First Aid for my work and thankfully it's only been minor incidents I've been called to. I'm surprised to learn the format for first aid courses are changing at the end of this month, more cut backs. The council I work for are heavily involved in the Cardiac programme and they aim to have 500 people take part next week.

Reminds me of Dublin half marathon a few years ago when a runner collapsed in front of me at the opposite side of the road (I had finished but was waiting on others). Someone must have been looking after him that day as he fell right at the feet of a doctor who started CPR as I ran to get medical assistance and an aed. The guy made a full recovery after being taken to hospital but I remember the doctor light heartedly joking about giving him a slabbery kiss.

That's great LouLou

SPR - my 10k time is a bit soft so I'm hoping to use the marathon training miles to knock that down a bit and generally look at shorter stuff over the winter/spring and then tackle Chester again next year.

Interestingly I found 'Hadd' based marathon training and an increase in miles had a bit of a blunting effect on my speed over 5k. My parkrun times were quicker when I was doing half the mileage!

SPR, I think London just turned in to a bad day. Felt fine to half way but I sensed it was then getting tougher and at 17 I was making contingency plans and by 19 PtB, WW, STOOSH and hundred of others had passed me by and I had a tough old time. Chester felt same to halfway, but then I had what felt like a tough patch and I thought here we go again. However that turned out to be a hill and when I got to 18 still holding pace, then I knew I was on for a better day.

Anyway, enough about Chester now, its over to Gus and Steve for this weekend.

Idea from Smell thread stolen, and a reference to Lou's excellent post added to the sidebar.

I've never done a First Aid course, or learnt CPR. There's a vacancy in our department at work for a first-aider; I'll volunteer for it now.

Nice sidebar addition ptb. Agree that's a post that's unlikely to be topped.

It'll be a while before the cause of his death is confirmed of course, and as I understand things he was taken ill very very late in the race, just around the time the race arrives back to the race course and the medical response was swift. So too early to presume it must have been a cardio issue which was anything other than irresolvable at the scene, but that would appear to be the most likely scenario. He was a classic middle aged runner, had a 3:13 VLM pb and ran and raced regularly. It does make you wonder whether the next time it could be you.

Not sure there is a huge amount that can be done to prevent these sorts of things happening from time to time. But any small steps that can be done are valuable.

Lou - any advice on pre-emptive checks that we could ask a GP to undertake or refer to identify whether we are in a higher risk group or not? Intrigued by your "athletes heart" reference and wondered whether this is something which unwittingly we are all exposing ourselves to.

Excellent post LouLou.

I do a first aid update every 3 years. Some are good, some not so. If any of you are within striking distance of Southampton I can wholeheartedly commend Steve Gravells 1 day RYA First Aid course (https://www.technical-recreational-coaching.co.uk/) which includes the use of defibrillator/aed's. Don't be put off by the sailing context, the content is all day-to-day relevant but includes first aid related to drowning which, as many of us exercise in or near water, is very useful. I have no vested interest in the company, I just think it is the best of these courses that I have found and Steve (a medical first responder) is an excellent instructor. It costs £59 for the day.

For those with time on their hands on Sunday my race number is 1587 and apparently Great Runs provide a stalking app to track 10k splits.

Nice little 5M bimble this morning.

Looking forward to sitting back at the weekend with a bowl of popcorn and watching the race tracking :-)

Finished off "Running with the Kenyans" this morning, coincidentally had left the last couple of chapters documenting his Lewa marathon and NYC marathon experiences until after my debut - could really identify with many of his thought processes (though not the one about the fear of their being cheetahs and leopards around!). A great read, presume most on here have read it already?
