That reminds me, need to get the Chester organisers to confirm what brands of stuff they will be dishing out on the run. I tried to ask a few weeks ago via twitter but they didn't answer, and the website says "we'll announce later" or words to that effect.

Thanks for the pat on the back Happy - one of the reasons I'm posting a lot in this thread is that hopefully others in my debut position could take something from it. Might have to turn the posts into a blog to bring them together (along with replies and other bits of feedback).

I've never taken gels. Sounds like a lot of work to plan all that stuff.

Oh and PtB will be pleased to know I now manually lap in races (although it has lead me to note how rubbish most markers are).

Did you not fuel at all during marathons Curly? As I posted above, I'm not really using gels because I know I have to, I'm adding them in because I think I may need to (and therefore, following the premise of trying nothing new on race day, I've got to test them out before hand).

Do you drink or eat anything during your marathon Curly?

I try not to Happy - usually a bit of water. I do all my long runs (including those with MP in) off no brekkie except a few coffees and without water so am well adjusted to it.

I havent done a mara for 2 years, but did run only a 1 min positive split in 2015. Dont think I hit the wall, but did slow off a little from fatigue. I'll aim to remedy that next time around with more longer runs, I'm thinking about going up to 24 (but dont tell them on the 20 mile myth thread ;))

Wow, if you didn't have a major sugar depletion effect (hitting the wall) after 2-2.5 hours of hard running you are a miracle of human physiology. Usually only people who are fat burning can continue for beyond 2.5 hours, and that's, by definition, a massively lower intensity than sugar burning e.g. below 70% max HR, which no one races at! I wonder how you did it?

I'm off to look at your various distance race times and your training paces to see if you are a secret 2:30 marathoner who just jogged a 3:2x?! :-) G

Sorry, 3:15 and a few seconds. I'd forgotten you already had that.

Lol. Been away a while - no problem. Maybe a gel would have helped with those 29 secs eh ;)

Nah, don't get me wrong, I'm not criticising, just confused. Your pace was steady throughout. You pulled out some quick miles on tired legs at the end. Seems like a very evenly paced race.

Certainly not a "hitting the wall" pattern, where you grind to a complete halt and can barely move your legs, sometimes accompanied by dizziness, swimming head, loss of concentration and control. Basically total shut down. General fatigue and a slight slowing is a sign of perfect pacing and (usually) of good fuelling.

I just can't understand where your body was getting sugar from to continue to power your muscles? I'm off to google if anyone else has experienced this, at performance level speeds. :-) G

That is impressive Curly. Maybe you consume <1600 calories a day so don't have a reliance on sugar? Guy from my old running club is restricting calorie intake, avoiding sugars and running whilst fasted. Will be interesting to see how his autumn marathon turns out.
