Tommy Hughes, 62, ran 2:30:04 at Manchester yesterday. Un-bloody-believable!

In the interest of pepping up this thread, hopefully I'll be running the MK mara on May 2nd. This will be my first marathon since Oct 2019. I ran 2.37 back then, but since then I've had all kinds of niggles, the dearth of races we all experienced, a hernia op, and a stress fracture. I've piled on the cycling mileage when I couldn't run, and had a pretty good 12 week training programme, but I've really no idea what to aim for. What do you reckon I should go for? Just getting round, or my old race pace (c6min/miles)?

AJLB, out of curiosity, how do you feel cycling feeds into your running fitness? I've decided to add in 3-4 cycle rides per week, maybe 1 replacing a running session, to increase my overall training while remaining low impact. But I'm never entirely sure that cycling really helps running that much, and the literature is ambiguous. Certainly I know loads of runners locally who cycle a lot without becoming great runners off the back of it.

Sorry, I know it's not the right place here, but just to follow up my post about Tommy Hughes above, and maybe to cheer up (?) some of the guys on here who worry about getting too old... Alastair Walker broke the M65 10K world record last weekend, by over a minute, in a time of 34:32. https://athleticsweekly.com/featured/stunning-world-m65-record-for-alastair-walker-easter-results-round-up-1039955780/. I'm 61 and am hoping to get close to 36 minutes in a 10K next weekend if the conditions are good, but suddenly it all seems rather pathetic!

J2R - well cycling's definitely better than nothing from an aerobic and leg strength point of view. You need to do a lot to get close to the benefits of running though (which is why I switched to running in the first place!). Most of mine nowadays is on the indoor trainer, which means you can do some proper intensity without worrying about traffic. And Tommy Hughes is phenomenal! Anyone know how he trains? |

AJLB, I don't think there is really any reason to drop pace significantly at your age, if your training has been going well. I ran poorly with stupid pacing at Mancs a couple of weeks ago but reckon with a proper performance I'd have only lost a minute or two on my best, and I'm a few years older (53 now). IMO a change of structure and a break from racing isn't a particularly bad thing, especially for those who aren't really at the truly elite level. I also did more cycling over the past couple of years (mostly zwift) and it added a lot of interest and variety but I personally wouldn't use it as a basis for running fitness. More of an off season sort of thing or perhaps a weekly cross-training session. I've never managed to be strong in cycling and running at the same time, but maybe it works for some... |

I did a 10 mile trail race today in 66:51 and was really pleased with it. Its been a long 9 months since I ran last. Tore my ankle ligaments last June (then again in late August after returning too soon). Few bouts of covid in between so was just good to get out there again. I'm several months away from full fitness but just so happy to be racing again.

AJLB, how are your pace sessions going? I would use that as a guide for marathon pace. Start steady, after 10 miles you will know how you feel - either push on, steady, or cool it a bit.
