Claypole - sorry for the delayed reply. Yes I would say technique and biomechanics come into this. Overuse is a bit of nebulous term I struggle with a bit. Your body can cope with huge volumes of training provided your lifestyle, strength, nutrition, sleep allows for you to successfully adapt to that training. It may well be that some bio-mechnical inefficiencies (we ALL have these) have contributed but undoubtably there would have been a combination of factors. The trouble with running biomechanics is conformation bias to a point. Once a runner is injured having a look at them run its pretty easy ti find bio-mechnical issues that could have been the cause. However most runners have bio-mechancial inefficiencies and yet many never get issues or injuries. As important is your strength and running specific application of strength to work with some of the biomechanics that you have. Yes we can all work to become more efficient runners, but e also need to work to get as strong as we can to support our own individual bodies (which means some focus on individual S&C). It is certainly worth looking at. Gilmores is quite a complex issue. As you will know it relates to the inguinal ligament, and some widening through the femoral canal. As the obliques come away from the ligament the TVA is left unsupported and this is obviously a big impact on your ability to maintain proper form. As its an adductor muscle its not all that common an issue for runners as it tends to be more in twisting based sports but many runners underestimate the loading and support work done by adductors and abductors in running and yes certainly unless there was an acute moment you can remember that created the hernia I would suggest a god look at biomanchics, form and hip position throughout the gait cycle would be important part of the rehab before developing a tailored S&C programme to support any bionechncial issues you may find. I would suggest doing this with a very good sports physio or a biomechanist. Whilst running coaches like (myself included) are pretty good generally with form and general technique work, making small changes and improvements when it comes to detailed rehab its worth investing in seeing someone who can really go into this in some depth. |

To add I have had one runner wth this issue (actually a PT client who ran marathons). He made a pretty rapid return to running post surgery and was doing some decent (light) session 6 weeks after surgery.

Hi Tom. Many thanks for your detailed reply - really appreciate your insight. Rehabbing like a loon at the moment and will get my gait looked at when running again. All the best 😀 |

Really enjoyed catching a bit of the highgate night, thanks for the link. Sorry to hear about your injury though, hope you get through it soon. Just remember all that base fitness you have isn't going to disappear overnight, you'll come back strong. Still gutting though. Bob - congrats on the trophy, well deserved, keep battling with the mini-bobs for space on the table. Baz, nearly there, just keep those taper jitters under control and get visualising that storming run next weekend. I did a local fell race on Thursday night - still stiff! Still, it was really great to race even if I was quite a bit off the podium, looking forward to doing some more. |
