There are usually about 20 in the M65-70 category at our local parkrun and I’m usually about mid table, which as I run around 48-52% wava is exactly as it should be..... I have two running targets for when I reach M70 ( next year😳), one is sub30 parkrun which should be achievable and the other is a sub 60 10k which will be a bigger challenge... |

It's whether the 70+ can complete, rather than compete, that I'm mostly wondering. 50-60 age group is still pretty quick, I may be starting to intrinsically slow down just a touch, but I don't really mind that so long as I can keep enjoying it. But those participation numbers falling off a cliff through the 60s...is it that runners are choosing to stop, or getting injured/knackered, or did that cohort basically miss the running craze through being too old when it started? It's not just the longest events either, our local 10k fell race had on average about one 70+ man, and no women that age, for the last few years. |

With older women there's likely to be a big element of lack of opportunity to do sport at a committed but not elite level in the past. When my mother was in her teens and twenties she would have been barred from road races in the UK and she was 44 (and I was 20) when the first women's Olympic marathon took place. I expect this effect to lessen with time and for there to be lots of fast seventy-something women when I reach that age.

Agree with Vrap, Clare Elms is an example of the women coming through now (that is to say those who have been running a long time but had more opportunities than those the generation before them): thepowerof10.info 18:02 5k this year at V55, but looks to be about to go into V60. |

Completion would be the issue beyond 10k for me jda. Recovery after runs takes longer, hills are getting steeper (!), so I doubt my body would be able to cope with the training volume needed to complete longer distances. That said I will continue to do as much as I can, as quickly as I can for as long as I can 😀

My MiL did parkrun at age 85. One of the most regular parkrunners at Clitheroe turned 80 this week. Clitheroe isn’t an easy course. I regularly compete on the golf course with chaps who are well into their 80s. I haven’t set a target for hanging up my running shoes or selling my clubs and bikes. I reckon it’ll be obvious when the day comes. Having said that, I’m not quite 60 yo and I’m wholly incapable of golf, cycling, or walking a parkrun at the moment. |

Mr JK's selection for an England Masters team at the 10k distance has come shortly after his 67th birthday. He's not planning on giving up any time soon. In fact, he's considering taking up track running and thinks he could be in with a chance of doing quite well.
