Mrs Jigs (Luverlylegs)
It’s frustrating that you are having to compete against ladies so much younger than you , it would be so different if there was more competitors in V60.

A student summarized this graph today by saying, "VO2max, critical power and the lactate threshold become increasingly more relevant to everyday life as we age, with tasks of daily living eliciting greater percentages of VO2max as we age." From Twitter.

We have a runner in our club who did his first marathon around 70. He's 76 (?) now and is well over 100 marathons!! As he says, he doesn't have much competition in his age group and just has to keep going! Very inspiring!

That's a horrible graph. Though the collapse in VO2max is not something I'm seeing personally. Maybe the top 1% is a bit flatter :-)

My Garmin keeps telling me my fitness age is 20. I’m sticking with that :-P

Age 45 to 55 my VO2 Max has declined slowly, mid 60's to mid 50s.

I can still run at 10 mph (not for long), 9mph I can do for 10 miles.

I'm fighting the decline....

Feel it most in brute strength to be honest, lifting gym weights.

I find I notice things most in longer recovery times between physical effort of whatever kind. Breathing: I used to do daily exercises which I haven't done since Covid March 2020, as it is too painful and sends my heart racing out of control. I don't think it is an age thing...
I can go longer and slower the older I get...

I’ve just met with Reeves again for my ‘pension review’. One of the things o was really hoping for was a view of what my DB pension might be worth. He didn’t go into it in depth but they had asked for a transfer value, which was a pleasant surprise to me. I’m feeling a bit more positive about all things pension / retirement at the moment… the key takeaway was I need to get the money out of my current company pension and invest it somewhere where it will make more for me - the big question obviously is whether that is with Reeves, or something else.

At the age of almost 64 I had clinical laboratory Cardio Pulmonary Exercise Test to confirm adult late onset asthma and it accurately measured my VO2Max as 50.1 which was way higher than the green line's c.39 for a 95th percentile. A few years later, my Garmin determines my VO2Max as 50 (I know that is not accurate like a CPET). Plus, I can still run up stairs and run under 10mm, so I would agree with jda's observation.

I plan to continue to ignore* my age and move as much and as fast as I can, and remain as flexible and as strong as possible.

* I might have to set reminders to actually do things like stretching and strength stuff because it is easier to go days or weeks without doing these things.
