Ah just looked up the translator definitely does alter the style. Can I say look for Maureen Freely ones (if poss), and avoid Guneli Gun - I had at one time both translations of the Black book and Freely's was obviously superior and easier to read. Other translators (Ekin Oklap, Erdag Goknar) are fine, but Gun's were quite stilted and wordy.

I've read some stuff by Freely about their collaboration and I'm not surprised they are good translations. She's also a good writer herself.

Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively is very good. Sweeping generalisation, but female writers seem to be much better at this writing lark than men. Greater intelligence and empathy, probably, not to mention honesty.
