Milkman is wonderful. I am recommending it to everyone, though more particularly to those old enough to remember the period it's set in.

Bit random, but has anyone read "Lyndon B. Johnson: Portrait of a President" by Robert Dallek?

Milkman is a book I find myself still thinking about long after I read it. Not much seems to happen but the voice of the girl and all the things that are unsaid layer up and up to create such an atmosphere of underlying tension.

GP: As in "Hey, hey, LBJ, how many kids d' you exterminate today?". I read Storm Front, which was interesting, and significantly better than The Search - Geoff Dyer , which some else pulled out of the bran tub for me at Christmas (which they gave 6/10 - generously I think). But parallels between the stories, and both with elements of pulp noir.

Pulp noir is a nice phrase.

I think blaming Vietnam on LBJ is deeply unfair. Only recency bias I think gets him relegated to second in my 'most admired US presidents' list (behind Obama).

I'm persevering with Milkman as it's a good book but I am struggling with the way it's written. It's quite claustrophobic and I can only read so much at one time.

I'm going to have to read something lighter to break it up.
