Have been doing two sessions a week for about a month now and can report that from having to do a plank with my forearms on the floor and literally shaking with effort trying to hold that for 30seconds, I can now do a 'proper' plank for over 2 minutes :) Am so glad I persevered and actually quite proud of myself :)

In terms of core training most if not all of the references a I've are a bit behind the current thoughts on core. In 2010 the American College of Sports Medicine recommended vertical core training as a more effective way to improve performance compared with traditional horizontal core exercises such as plank , crunches etc

This blog explains it in more detail and gives a few exercises to do

Thanks M27, that's a really interesting article that confirms a lot of the training I do with my PT is very effective. We do all the med ball exercises as described, but I've never really thought of them as core before.
