It depends on your location and microclimate, risk aversion and dedication. Around April is best. Being disorganised I often miss the boat and play catch up. And annoyingly, my tallest ones some years are self sown at the allotment!!

My experience is if you go too early they get stunted, if you go too late they can get leggy and stringy and you are playing catch up.
You need plenty of room, they're thirsty and hungry.
Grow lots and annoy your neighbours.

You can also plant a couple of lots at different times. Last year I found it was so dry plus the soil at the allotment where they were planted was poor. I’m going to improve the soil there plus plant some in my front garden which faces south.
