So can I start them in pots and then plant out at end of March? Or do they go straight into the dirt outside? I’ve not had a garden for nearly 30 years so this will be all new to me.

However you like, Gus, except that 31st March is the earliest planting date. Er, remember this is Scotland! Most people start them in pots. The soil is likely to be too cold, even until May.

Mine will be starting in egg cartons on the windowsill again. There is no chance that any papier mache peepots or sickbowls will be involuntarily donated by the NHS when the time comes to plant them on. Oh, no, no way, never.
