Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

GGP: It slightly depends upon how you're getting lost.

I think the width/height of the screen on any Garmin is a bit small to really help with planning routes or working out return routes if you go off track, even for those with OS mapping. I also find with OS maps on screen it can be a bit cluttered to get a quick sense of next upcoming turns.

My preference if I have a preplanned route is to have a breadcrumb trail (just a line on screen), and have a separate map for any points where I need more detail.

The only situation I can think of where OS mapping on a Garmin may be useful is if you have a habit of going off track and can't suss where you are - then comparing the on-screen map with a separate map could be useful.

That is odd G.
Diet, sleep patterns, work and social patterns then might come into play but crikey you end up in circular patterns trying to assess factors. We are such complex beings aren't we.
Hope it stays away

Just came into my head a story about Ryan Giggs, the footballer, and the hamstring problems that he suffered in his left leg.
Not sure if I have remembered correctly but it was put down to the different strength level and different posture needed to depress the clutch pedal in the various cars that he owned and drove. He switched to automatic cars and problem disappeared.
This has nothing to do with G's cramp other than to highlight how obtuse some causes can potentially be.

Thank you everyone for the Garmin advice. It's sort of what I expected I guess. MudMeanderer - yes, that's the situation - we usually take a book (eg the vertebrate publishing ones), or pedal north printed instructions for routes, and then find that we've missed something/gone wrong and have to retrace our steps or wander around getting frustrated. Might get it for him... but perhaps also remember to take the full OS maps too...! Thank you again.

You can put the openstreetmap maps onto most garmins for the cost of a SD card. They're not as good as OS, granted, but they're generally good enough to relocate to defined paths on the bike
