I agree, a track stand is a really useful skill... so it's not me you differ in opinion from (for a change ;))

Nice one, megster. Sounds like a pretty good course!

No, it's Al. We've agreed to disagree but he's wrong :-)

Indeed, he is... I wonder how many times he's ended up keeling over, or having to put a foot down because he's stalled on a trail... (or perhaps he can track stand but isn't aware of it :))

I can definitely see the benefit of the track stand, and it was pitched exactly as mentioned - i.e for taking a pause and checking out what's coming. As a road-rider too *ducks* it's also good in traffic!

I've never understood what the problem is with just putting your foot down (and I can track stand). Unless where you want to put your foot is a bloody great hole, or the edge of the trail!

I can't say I've ever needed to track stand on the trails. You can slow down on the approach to an obstacle and if you can't see enough, get off the bike and take a look.

...or you're in a big puddle, as happened to me on Saturday, Angus.

Ha ha. Micro-debate about track standing on the trails :-)

I'd say the main time it happens with me is when I'm following someone on a trail and they slow down or stop suddenly. It allows me to pause without putting a foot down. Angus, putting a foot down can make it harder to get started again - particularly if you are on a sharp incline (exacerbated for those of us who are clipped in and have saddles at XC height :-))

True... or wading though mid as I had yesterday. Being able to balance at very low speed was damned useful yesterday...!
