On the air-con thing. I discovered yesterday we have air con at work. I have a room full of pharmaceuticals which have to be kept below 25 degrees C. Today is the first time I have ever had to switch it on. The newer buildings on site have air pumps and the heat being kicked out of them is unreal. |

How much soap/detergent can the plants handle? I have mentioned collecting grey water to my OH for our garden. I already do if I have just been rinsing things, I take the bowl and tip it into the water butts, but more gets wasted. I was concerned about putting the soap into the ground/plants. (That said, everything we use is either soak-away friendly or used in tiny amounts as we are not on mains sewerage.) |

I water my non-food crops with my dishwater rather than use the water butts. I use the family's shower water to flush my toilet. Have put cardboard in front of my windows. Does a pretty good job on reducing the heat coming in (better than curtains). At night let in the cold air and then pretend the house is a fridge in the day.....try not to let it out. So have some cool areas to sit in |

My composite door appears to be doing a great job reducing the heat coming in

cackleberry I don't use Himalayan or Epsom salts in my bath, as that kills plants, but a bit of soap does them no harm. I only use natural, bio-degradable soaps, detergents etc anyway and use little of it. I have been doing it for many years and not seen adverse effects but it only goes on the pots and greenhouse. I would not water my salads with it, as they are like sponges! Fruit trees are fine with the contents of the washing up bowl, even though I don't rinse plates first, I just scrape. Again, for water conservation, so there can be some "compost" at the bottom of the bowl...

We should do a dishwash off...... see who can use the least amount of water and still have a clean set of dishes I use the last dish water to remove the dirt off the dirty dishes. That water is then on the plants, the dishes are soaped and then dribble the tap to clean off the suds. I use about 3 cups of water for 4 people and their dishes + the cooking stuff |

The only problem Hanneke is that I now won't let anyone else wash dishes unless they learn and implement my method!

Maybe we should name heatwaves as we do storms, but name them after polluting fossil fuel companies

We would definitely lose the dish-wash-off! (PS I read 'composite' as compost and it didn't make any sense...) |
