The Doctor K Cup

98 watchers
The seventh annual Doctor K Cup will take place on Saturday October 19th 2024

How to join in

Firstly, add the 2024 Doctor K Cup to your Fetch portfolio.

All you need is a GPS watch or app. On the day, RUN AT LEAST 5K WITHOUT LOOKING AT YOUR WATCH. The Fetch Benchmark system will pull out your fastest 5k from your run (so you can include it as part of your long run if you like). The person who gets closest to their prediction will be declared the winner (though the judges decision is final!).

It would be lovely if you could upload your 'K' pics to the gallery (make a K shape with your fingers) to help us remember Doctor K and all the Fetchies we have lost.

NB A GPS watch reporting 5.00km will do so from 4995 metres onwards, but you MUST run at least 5000 metres or more. To avoid disappointment add an extra 10 seconds on to the end of your run, just to make sure.

Thanks to Fetch for all the additional work - you do the miles in more ways than 23 (as ever), thanks to Joopsy for his original idea. Lovely to read about so many Fetchies taking part in their various ways.

No challenge for the cup here - but I did as I have on previous occasions: On my Saturday morning 4 mile dog walk I took some time to sing through a couple of Jackson Browne songs in my head. 'These Days' and 'Running on Empty'. Here's to Dr. K, a really great bloke.

Thanks Joopsy and Fetch.

My problem is not reading the instructions - probably why I’m rubbish at exams too 😂

Thanks Fetch for keeping this alive - not always been able to participate previously due to parkrun volunteer commitments but this was a welcome opportunity to remember.

It seemed right to pop over to our parkrun venue on what would have been our sixth birthday so here's a belated 'K' from where the finish should be. :)

I couldn’t make it yesterday, so can I enter today’s run? It won’t be anywhere near my predicted time due to taking a wrong turn and a lot of mud!

I enjoyed taking part but must figure out how the benchmark thing works - average pace 10:14 per km but 5K benchmark 52.31? I can see a string of 5 consecutive km figures which total to 50:32 (part of a 10 mile walk). And the 10 mile benchmark was over half an hour slower than my actual time.

It was a lovely way to remember those no longer with us, thanks to Joopsy for the idea, and to Fetch for making it happen this year without parkrun.

Well done everyone, and how lovely that in these tough times FE and Fetch himself find a way to make this an even bigger, and wider, event!

Is there a place (not being morbid, but thinking it could be a positive In Memoriam type place) where we can list those Fetchies who have passed? With permission of their friends / relatives if required etc.? There were some lovely things said about Spikeyboy who died just a few weeks ago and who was a very active in Fetch and Scottish running community (parkruns, local races and just general lovely, supportive guy). Would just be nice to gather all the comments together. Just a thought.

Well done to the 15 who were less than 10s out from their prediction. And WTAx to all those who were 10 mins or more out! I thought my 2:40 was bad!! ;-)

Great stuff everyone, well done again! :-) G

2024 Instructions

Add the following race to your portfolio:

fetcheveryone.com/races/the-doctor-k-cup-10329609

Enter your predicted time by October 18th (the day before the run).

On the 19th October, run at least 5k WITHOUT LOOKING AT YOUR WATCH OR GETTING ANY PACING HELP!!!

RESULTS WILL BE POSTED HERE:

fetcheveryone.com/doctorkcup.php

Fetch will extract the results by looking at your benchmarks for 5k (so for your own sake, avoid tunnels, tall buildings, heavy tree cover, pylons etc). If you are running a local 5k loop, please add a bit on, just to make sure that your watch registers at least 5k's worth of data. But no peeking!

The person who is closest to their predicted time will win the 'Doctor K Cup' for one year.

NB Doctor K was a big parkrun fan - so you can do your run at parkrun, but ***PLEASE*** make sure you cover at least 5000 metres. A GPS watch reporting 5.00km will do so from 4995 metres onwards, but you MUST run at least 5000 metres or more. To avoid disappointment add an extra 10 seconds on to the end of your run, just to make sure.
