i regularly practice periods of calorie restriction although I tweek the 5:2 pattern to suit my training and race schedule.

I'm happy to outline my approach if that would be useful.

I found the theory behind this "diet" fairly unconvincing. There's a lot of personal testimony but the "science" isn't that strong.

Wouldn't do for me at all. I'm much better suited temperamentally to being just a little bit careful every day.

V'rap - I would advise the 7:0 diet for you. Eat a little bit less every day and don't , whatever you do, EVER have 'fasting' days.

I would have to move every living thing out of the house on those days for their own safety ;)

theres loads of quite big names in the fitness world at the moment raving about this but also i have been doing a bit of research lately & there seems to be that while men seem to do ok on this longer term, i think women need to be a bit more careful... loads of personal experiences ive read from women that have trialled it have totally messed up thier homonal balance causing more issues than when they started

im quite interested in all things nutrition wise & there has been no long term studies to show what the after effects of this may be...while i think its good for some people & can work, there are sooooooooooooooooo many people out there that this is a bad idea. get your metabolism working correctly by eating more real food more often, loose the processed crap, then if you still need just that edge to move results on then maybe decide if its for you...just my 2 pence :)

It doesn't take a degree in biochemistry, or even an average level of intelligence, to realise that you can't "eat as much as you want on the other five days and still lose weight" unless "as much as you want" is less than the amount that got you overweight in the first place.

Yes please Geprig. Well I have just come back from a 3 mile run and feel fine. Having weetabix now instead. If you are doing the 5:2 'diet' to lose weight then you probably shouldn't eat 'as much as you want' on your feed days because you could easily go over. I am doing this 'diet' to shed a few pounds but also to remind myself what hunger feels like. It's a personal thing but I find my 'normal' eating habits (eating almost constantly throughout the day and thinking about what i'll be eating next whilst half way throug my meal) not very healthy in many ways.

We'll see how it goes, we all dip our toes in to try new things now and again, some work and some don't.

5 days of 'normal' eating and 2 days eating 600 calories (men), 500 calories (women).

Fast days are best not done on consecutive days, unless you have amazing willpower.
