I'm actually sitting here wondering that myself, Ceratonia.
Thinking about mileage and the kind of training I'm doing for Ultras and the knock on effect it seems to be having on my road race times for shorter distances.

I wasn't even sure I was going to attempt any kind of speed today so soon after NDW50 and having only run once since then (and that was a slow and tired 7 mile commute home from work last Saturday). It wasn't until I set off that I thought maybe I would give it a go and see what happens.

I'm trying to stick to one speed work session (intervals or hill reps) and one tempo session a week with all other training being easy/slow/long runs

My fastest ever 5k was about two weeks after my first Highland Fling!!! Ultra's and running faster over shorter distances aren't mutually exclusive.

Nice one Bint. I'm 3 seconds the wrong side. I didn't attempt sub 45 last year but might have a go this year, given the right opportunity.

For the last three weeks, I've been doing 3 x2k, with 60s breaks - in an attempt to improve my 5k and 10k times. I was wondering whether to continue doing that, or try some shorter ones to work on my leg speed (or summat). Any suggestions for a session? I've made small improvements with the session I've been doing - just wondering if some shorter intervals might give me a speed boost. What do you reckon?

My favourite (most effective rather than actually liking doing it) is 4 or 5 X 5mins with 3 mins recovery. It's sick making, and I often screw up the first or last but it seems to have an effect :)

Because of what I'd been doing for the previous few weeks, I went with 6 x 1k, with 2min breaks. I think it went pretty well (downloading now), but one of my toenails has viciously attacked the toe next door.
